One of the guys at my table has offered to run “The Hoard of the Dragon Queen” for D&D. I nearly bit his arm off.
Recently, given the haphazard nature of the Tikhon fantasy campaign as it lurched from system to system, I’ve been wanting to take a break from GMing at the regular Friday Night Game.
Of course, up until now, stopping being GM would have folded the group. But three recent events have changed things: D&D 5e; our switch to 5e; my desire to play a Wizard.
D&D 5e
The new D&D has us enthused. It has also brought three players back to our table. You can’t argue with that… but the ailing DM is left feeling under pressure.
Enter the official Tyranny of Dragons campaign. With the publication of The Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Wizards placed into my hands a really cool and pretty easy to run campaign. All I needed to do was persuade the group that a campaign switch was a good move. Thankfully, one of my players has offered to DM it for us… and I felt so grateful.
Our Switch
Our recent switch to D&D has been a godsend too. The game is easy to prep for and easy to run. But, not being 4e, it has also got be enthused about being a player.
I’ve spent several weeks fantasizing about playing some kind of arcane spellcaster. With the offer to step back from DMing, well… now’s the time.
Wizard, please.
Wizard
In old D&D the Wizard was boring to play. He had, like, 2 spells or something and could cast one a day. Oh, I know he wasn’t THAT bad in 3e and 4e, but still…
In 5e, reading the options, I found myself inspired again. A Wizard gets lots of cool magic and can make a real difference to the party. Instead of falling back on my old standard of playing a Thief, I am tempted to play a Wizard.
That makes it much easier to give up the DM’s chair.
Nice.
Can I do it?
Can I give up the chair? I hope so… at least for a while. At least on Fridays.
I have a tough and busy new job and, frankly, not having to prep every other week would be a welcome relief.
That’s not to say, however, that I want to STOP. Oh no. This is also an opportunity to explore the other options for play… eg. online.
Game on! Bring on the Dragon Queen!
