With the Episode VII trailer out there and a growing sense of excitement surrounding Star Wars, I dusted off my copy of “Age of Rebellion” this weekend.
We played the first game in the FFG series of Star Wars RPGs, “Edge of the Empire“, and had some fun. This one I’ve had for a while but not had a chance to play.
What with the new-found requirement for one-off games, I’ve decided to stick my toe back into the Empire’s water, so to speak.
Neat Characters
The most notable thing, other than the funny dice, about the FFG Star Wars games is the way in which you can build some pretty neat characters.
For my one-off, I’ve built four cool archetypal Rebels:
- Bhuuna Fel, Human Infiltrator
- Logan Farell, Human Commando
- Grek Daal, Duros Pilot Ace
- R2-X4, Droid Saboteur
These four are crammed into a Lambda-class Shuttle and off to do no-good in my short scenario. It’ll probably involve a break-in to steal some much-needed Imperial intel.
Actually, it’s a lot of fun to create characters with this game because you a) get to imagine your way into Star Wars, and b) the system is pretty neat at giving you hooks.
I already know that I want to see my guys play this scenario because I have a really cool idea for the antagonist that I can roleplay to the hilt. And, yes, there will likely be Stormtroopers. As if you had to ask.
Military, Spy Stuff
Edge of the Empire, while cool, didn’t quite spark my interest as much as Age of Rebellion has managed. Certainly I am also waiting for the third game, Force and Destiny, so we can play full-fledged Jedi and Sith… but, to be honest, I found myself nicely at home with the Rebellion. That probably has a lot to do with Star Wars Episode IV being my first love in cinema movie experiences. I was, after all, about 6 years old.
Military roleplaying is very much my thing right now: every time I sit to plan an SF, I end up imagining military situations. The Rebellion allows us to round that out as guerrilla warfare, drawing in the spy stuff too. This team I’ve created is all about infiltration, sabotage, and blowing sh*t up. Oh, yes!
It’s Star Wars!
Oh, and I am digging into the background stuff in the Core Rulebook. Yummy too… lots of great artwork, cool data, and even a nice galactic map. I’d forgotten how geeky Star Wars can be.
Even though it’s just a one-off game, here’s me deciding where the mission will take place as though it was the biggest decision of my GMing career. That, my friends, is how far in the Rebellion draws me.
Game on!
