This afternoon has been about re-learning to make simple model terrain. I’ve been inspired by the 2.5D idea and begun to model the small bonus dungeon from “Moonspike Tower“. Having been asked by some students to run it in a couple of weeks time, I’ve completed the first room and a couple of short access ways. It was a
rewarding experience!
The materials used are from the collection of Crooked Staff Terrain and using the guidelines from the first video in the YouTube channel.
The textures are all printed onto thick paper (I used 120gsm) and then glued onto a suitable thick card. I decided to try using 3mm black foam board and they seemed to work out ok, although 5mm might have been better. What I love is that the textures can be downloaded free!
The main challenge was figuring out how to make my room larger than the free resources allow using just one sheet. My solution was probably not the best way, but it works.
This is a nice, low-cost way to make some visually pleasing terrain upon which to move miniatures or cardboard heroes. I’m going to use cardboard heroes at school, aiming to show the students how to add simple improvements to their hobby at a minimal cost. On top of that, I get to run my games in a physical dungeon that can pack into a small carry box and which weighs much less than resin or even published cardboard terrain.
Game on!
