It’s been an incredible week for me – not least to see our largest ever day of visits sparked by my last post which was about Savage Worlds!
I have simply been overwhelmed and delighted by the friendly and encouraging response to my fumbling attempts to learn the game from that community. Thank you!
One of the incredible things this week is that I have discovered an opening to actually run a Savage Worlds game with some friends. In about 4 weeks, all things being equal, I’ll be able to grab a small group and run something for them. I want it to be “Fast! Furious! Fun!”. I want to make it special.
This post is really a request for support and aid: Can you help me make a really good splash with Savage Worlds?
Getting Spaced
I pretty much started GMing roleplaying games with Traveller and Star Frontiers. SF is in my bones. But I rarely play in space anymore.
I’m not sure why, but we just don’t get as much mileage as we used to from the stars. I want to go home and do something about it.
This week, having dusted off the Savage Worlds Deluxe and Explorer Editions, ordered up the Action and Adventure Decks, and grabbed the SF Companion (2e)… well, I want to make something cool.
What I Like…
I like action adventure among the stars – big flashy guns and lots of boom – but also I like tension and mystery. My preference is for a hard-edged feeling but with space for the fantastic.
I loved the classic “Crash on Volturnus”-style Star Frontiers adventures of my youth. From Traveller, I like the sense of Big Space and cool tech. Yet, I also like magick and the supernatural in my games. Oh, and I love a good apocalyptic.
Right now, I am thinking of some kind of “Marines on a mission” scenario (think: Aliens) with something arcane thrown in.
Can Savage Worlds handle it? I think it probably can.
What I Don’t Like…
I don’t like aliens for the sake of aliens. I dislike when tech replaces skill and character. I don’t like utopia.
A good setting needs characters you care about and villains you believe in. And it needs tension and conspiracy and doubt. Not all chrome and scientism.
What Are My Next Steps?
I want to build something of my own – I am happy to beg, borrow, and steal from other settings (after all, I have limited time) but the final product needs to be something me. I want to say, “I did this!”
How do you start to make a cool one-shot Savage Worlds scenario?
Advice welcome. Actually… please help!
