Work continues on my new World of Mykenia. I’ve been focused on the starting region for a first campaign in the world and created my first realm: the Earldom of Greywold.
The adventurers will begin the town of Greyward, down in the south the region. Events around the borderlands between the Kingdom of Aleinia (of which the Greywold is a part) and the northern end of the Principality of Pellembral will be of initial interest to players.
In short, my aim is to create a sandbox-style campaign area which can be continually expanded upon as needed. I’ve chosen the familiar lands of Greyward because they are the kind of thing that players expect from their fantasy: it’s a Saxonesque realm with space for the familiar tropes. There’s also scope for twisting things and making them my own, however.
Pellembral, to the south, is a little less familiar. It’s an ancient seafaring city-state with pretensions to power while ruling over some pretty poor lands. The town of Ohlkar (seen on the above map) is the most northern community of the city-state’s direct influence but adventurers will meet agents of the dread citadel throughout the borderlands.
Design continues. I’m pretty excited about the initial direction of the world but there is a lot of work to do before I would even contemplate a first session. The first adventures are next on my list of things to do.
Game on!
Hey UR! I’m a pretty new reader (found you through Mythic resource links), but I’m excited about this series. I’ve taken a few stabs at world building but end up petering out, most of the time.
I’ll be curious to see how much of this you end up using in real games. I find that, for me, most of these things take the form of a “solo game for me” rather than actually seeing any table play. That’s actually one of the reasons I’ve been doing so much solo gaming lately.
